purple mattress review

You’re in the market for a new mattress. Should you get a traditional spring coil mattress or a memory foam mattress? How about neither? Keep reading this Purple Mattress review for a third option. It isn’t a memory foam mattress, and it isn’t a traditional spring coil mattress.

Calling it the first "no pressure" mattress, the makers of the Purple Mattress use hyper elastic polymer as the top layer of the mattress. It’s not foam, but instead is a super stretchy material that provides a medium firm layer of support that also keeps you cool.

Summary:  The only way to find out if it is the perfect mattress for you is to give it a try. You might be disappointed that you can’t try the Purple Mattress before you buy it, but I think it’s actually a good thing. Lying on a mattress for 15 minutes won’t tell you if it is the right mattress for you or not. Typically, you need at least two weeks for your body to adapt to it.

With the 100-day no-risk trial, you can actually give this mattress the kind of test a bed like deserves. Sleep on it for a month to see how it responds. You might not like it Day 1, but you may find that, after a few weeks, it actually is the most comfortable bed you have ever slept on.

What is the Purple Bed?

The Purple Mattress is a triple layer mattress made of two types of memory foam topped with the elastic polymer.

The bottom layer is four inches of 2.0lb polyurethane foam. This layer acts as the foundation and gives support, especially to heavy sleepers (heavy in terms of weight).

The middle layer is also polyurethane foam. This layer is 3.5 inches thick and is made with a 1.8lb polyurethane foam which gives compression support.

The top layer is the star of the show. That’s the elastic polymer. It isn’t foam, and it isn’t rubber or latex. It is two inches of a honeycomb-like polymer “smart grid” that is super stretchy.

The top layer will conform to your body keeping your back totally aligned. Your pressure points will sink into the material and push the pressure toward the middle layer of foam. You won't sink into this mattress and get “stuck” like you can with some memory foams.

An added benefit to the design is its cooling factor. You won’t overheat due to the unique shape and material.

The cover of the Purple mattress is made of a blend of viscose (27%), polyester (69%), and polyester-lycra (4%). The combination of these materials makes for a highly breathable cover. It won’t slide around on the mattress and it is also very breathable.

Purple Mattress Support

The combination of materials make for a unique sleep experience.

It doesn’t seem possible, but it is both a soft and firm support mattress at the same time. When you lie on it, the top layer removes any of the pressure points from your body. Your shoulders and hips sink in but don’t feel surrounded by the foam. Your back is also gently supported. It is similar to latex in the sense that it bounces back and responds quickly to your movements.

All in all, it gives you the support you need for your lower back to stay aligned, but it is soft enough to feel luxurious.

It doesn’t matter if you are a side sleeper, back sleeper, or stomach sleeper. Your back will stay aligned no matter what. The unique grid pattern of cells on the top layer works to let your pressure points, such as your shoulders and hips, sink into the material with the pressure being pushed into the other cells. Essentially, it displaces your weight.

If you are a large person, however, you will sink deeper into the layers and possibly create a depression that could cause your partner to slip toward your side of the bed. If you are under 300 pounds, this should not be an issue.

If you have seen any of the ads for the Purple Mattress, then no doubt you have seen the raw egg test. To show just how little motion transfer there is with the elastic polymer topping, you can toss a raw egg onto the bed without it shattering.

What this means is that you can be tossing and turning all night, and your partner won’t notice anything. If they, or you, are light sleepers, this is a huge benefit. Waking up when your partner goes for a midnight snack will no longer happen.

Cool, Quiet Sleep

The design of the polymer topping is also a great benefit to those who don't like the overheating issue associated with many memory foam mattresses and toppers. The fact that the layer is like a honeycomb of grids means that your body heat is transferred away from you and into the adjoining empty cell.

In addition, tthe squeaking noise associated with latex toppers is also addressed. The cells are coated with a plastic powder to act as a buffer and keep the sides of the cells from rubbing together in a way that would create squeaks.

Who would benefit from a Purple Mattress?

At around a 6-7 on the firmness scale, with 1 being soft and 10 being firm, people who don’t want a very soft mattress will like the Purple Mattress.

If you are looking to sink deep into the mattress, then you may be disappointed.

This mattress is ideal for those with back issues. Mattresses that are too soft are not good for your back, especially if you suffer from back pain and need your lower back aligned. Since this straddles the line between a soft and firm mattress, it will please most people.

Hot sleepers will especially enjoy getting the same benefits of comfort that they could get from memory foam without the drawback of overheating. The mattress cover also helps keep you cool because it is made from breathable material.

Anyone who wants something in between a memory foam mattress and a traditional spring mattress will love the unique features of the Purple Mattress. The polymer responds to your movements immediately so there is no sinking deep into the layer, but it also spreads out the pressure when you lie down on it or bounce.

Unpacking your Purple Mattress

Your bed will arrive in an unmistakable purple vacuum sealed bag. There are two straps to help move the mattress. Be warned, though, it is heavy and you shouldn’t try to lift it on your own. The king size mattress weighs 140 pounds.

It is a good idea to bring the mattress into the room where you plan to sleep on it. An even better idea is to open it while it’s on the bed frame you plan to put it on to make your life easier.

Included is a handy purple bag opener that looks somewhat like a letter opener. It fits right into a seam on the bag, and you simply slide it down the length. Be careful not to slice the mattress though. The bag is very easy to open.

Unlike most memory foam mattresses that have been compressed to fit inside a bag, the Purple Mattress is ready to sleep on as soon as you open it. It pops right up into its normal thickness. I have to assume that is because the polymer is so stretchy.

Best bed frame for Purple Bed

What’s unique about the Purple Bed is that it can work on any type of bed frame. As long as the frame will accommodate the mattress, there is no need to buy a new frame just for this mattress. If you have a box spring, just put the Purple Mattress right over the top of it. A platform bed works great. You can even use this mattress on an adjustable bed frame.

If you don’t already have a bed frame, then you should consider purchasing the Purple Bed platform base. It’s specifically designed to get the most out of your Purple Mattress.

The biggest differentiating factor compared to other bed frames is the fact that it has legs in the middle of the frame, not just the four corners. There are 12 legs  giving you even support throughout the mattress.

There are also slats in a grid pattern across the entire frame. Those slats are flat so the mattress lies totally flat. In addition, they are metal so there is no give. This provides you with a squeak-free frame that won’t make any noise no matter how much you bounce around on it.

This frame is also a little higher than your standard bed frame by 2.5 inches.

Do you need special sheets for the Purple Bed?

While you don’t need special sheets for the Purple Bed, the company does have a Purple Bed sheet that is rather unique.

I always have a problem with sheets bunching up since I tend to move around a lot at night. That goes for fitted sheets as well.

These sheets are made with super stretchy elastic and bamboo, so they never bunch up. They also don’t pill like cotton sheets, so they last much longer and stay comfortable for much longer.

If you are a hot sleeper, these breathable sheets will keep you cool and comfortable. They are 83% more breathable than those high-end Egyptian cotton sheets with the high thread count, and they are really soft, too.

As I mentioned, you don’t actually need any special sheets but, to get the most out of your new bed and to get a really good night's sleep,  these sheets come highly recommended.

Purple Bed Accessories

Your new Purple mattress won’t cause you to overheat and sweat; however, sometimes you will sweat. There is just no getting around it.

Maybe your A/C is on the fritz. Even though your mattress will help keep you cool, there is only so much it can do.

You could have the flu, and your high fever is causing you to sweat, too.

Whatever is causing you to sweat, you don’t want your mattress to end up getting wet. This is why you need the Purple Mattress protector.

If you have young children, you probably already have a mattress protector on your bed. You may find that they are not exactly breathable and often get bunched up worse than the sheets.

This mattress protector solves all of those problems. It is stretchy, so it fits perfectly without bunching up. It is totally waterproof while being water absorbent. When you sweat or spill some liquid on your bed, the protector will absorb the excess that doesn’t bead up without passing it through to the mattress.

This mattress protector is also machine washable and won’t stain no matter what the liquid is. You can drink wine in bed, stress free!

If you are going to accessorize your Purple Bed, you may as well go all the way. You can also get the Purple Pillow. It’s the same as the top layer of elastic polymer, so it forms perfectly to the contours of your head and keeps your neck aligned. You can read the full review here.
