When it comes to buying a mattress, it’s time to think inside the box! The new bed-in-a-box trend has changed the way we shop for mattresses. Without a showroom or pushy salesmen, you can order a high quality bed online and save loads of money. Read on to see our full Nolah mattress review and why you should buy one.
At first glance, the Nolah mattress might seem like your typical memory foam mattress. A closer inspection reveals that they have made some serious strides in fixing many of the problems associated with memory foam.
They made their own type of foam and combined it with Avena foam, a latex alternative. This resulted in added comfort, cool sleeping, great support, and low motion transfer.

What is the Nolah Mattress made of?
The Nolah is comprised of three distinct layers.
The top is a 2-inch layer of proprietary foam called Nolah Air Foam. It’s similar to memory foam but is made with millions of air bubbles that wick away the heat from your body and allow the air to flow out of the mattress.
It’s also slightly more responsive than memory foam, so you won’t sink so deep into it.
The next layer is 1 inch of a specialty latex-like Avena foam. It's stronger and more durable than Latex and also provides a healthy and responsive bounce, which gives you more support than you would normally get from memory foam.
The bottom layer is 7 inches of high density foam to act as a durable support. This is what will keep your bed lasting for many years to come. It is firm enough to give support on a platform bed frame and flexible enough to be used on an adjustable bed.
All of this adds up to a bed that is medium firm. Your pressure points, especially your shoulders and hips, will sink into the top layer providing pressure relief. The middle layer of Avena foam is firm enough to provide some push back so your back still gets the support you need.
The cover is a seamless knitted viscose cover that is very comfortable even without a sheet on top.
How does the Nolah Mattress sleep?
With this combination, Nolah has solved one of the biggest complaints against memory foam. You won’t sink in and get “stuck” in a depression that makes it hard to move around. It’s soft enough to feel cradled by the foam, yet bouncy enough to give the support you need.
We have reviewed a few other bed-in-a-box mattresses like the Purple Bed and the Leesa that are a bit more firm in the support department. Though they are excellent mattresses, one of the most common complaints against them comes from people who are looking for a little more softness. Side sleepers especially like a little more "give" in their mattress.
Nolah mattresses are slightly softer than the Purple Bed and Leesa. I wouldn’t exactly call it a soft sleep but, compared to those other mattresses, it is on the softer side.
Thanks to Nolah’s unique Air Foam, you will sleep remarkably cool. The foam is filled with air bubbles that will radiate your body heat away. Air is allowed to flow through the foam and between the layers to keep you cool. When you press on the mattress, you will hear a subtle whooshing noise of air coming out of it. It isn't loud enough to be distracting, however.
Since the top layer of Nolah Air Foam is similar to memory foam in some ways, it has very low motion transfer. A bed partner who gets up at night or is out of bed earlier than you will not disturb your sleep.
No special bed frame needed
If you are happy with your bed frame, you can keep it.
Not only is the mattress very economical for the quality you get, but also you save money by not needing to upgrade your bed frame.
The Nolah mattress works on any type of frame.
If you have a platform bed, the 7-inch bottom layer of high density foam is firm enough to still give you support without a box spring.
If you have a traditional bed frame with a box spring, you can just put this mattress right on top with no ill effects.
A slatted bed frame works as long as the slats are straight and not arched. Arched slats will leave the mattress draped over them, and your head and feet will be lower than your torso. Obviously, this would remove any benefit from the high-quality mattress.
Even adjustable beds work with the Nolah Mattress. At 10 inches thick, it would seem to be too firm to adjust, but it does actually bend.
Ordering and unboxing
Your Nolah mattress is made in the USA and is also made to order. When you order online, the factory receives a request and manufactures the mattress. It doesn’t get any fresher than that!
This is one of the ways that Nolah remains an inexpensive mattress. Not having warehouse full of inventory saves the company significant dollars, and they pass the savings on to the customer. There’s also no showroom or sales commissions that need to be paid.
Once your order is received and the product is made, it ships in 1-3 days. That makes a total of 5-8 days before you get your mattress.
Your mattress is compressed and sealed in an airtight bag and boxed.
Arriving at your door is your made-to-order, immensely comfortable Nolah Mattress in an easy- to-manage box.
Now, you just need to bring the box inside to where you plan to sleep on it. Take the compressed mattress out and lay it on the bed frame where you want to use it. Then CAREFULLY cut it open without cutting the mattress. It will unfold and decompress immediately. There will be a very slight off-gassing that will pass in just seconds.
Any odors that come off the mattress are perfectly safe. The materials are all made without the use of ozone depletes, PBDE flame retardants, formaldehyde, phthalates, mercury, lead, and other heavy metals.
Your mattress is now ready to sleep on. Some bed-in-a-box mattresses need a few hours to a few days to fully decompress before you can comfortably sleep on them. Luckily, if you are ready for a nap as soon as it comes out of the box, you can do so.
No risk, all rewards
If you have been sleeping on a traditional spring coil mattress for a number of years, then your body may need some time to adjust to a new way of sleeping. The first few days to weeks may have you feeling like you didn’t get as good of a mattress as you thought you would.
Try to get past the first 30 days to see if it really is the mattress and not just an adjustment period. The beauty is that you have 120 days to decide. That’s 20 days more than almost all other bed-in-a-box companies give you to get your money back.
If you decide you don’t want it, just call Nolah, and they will give you a full refund. They will send somebody to remove the mattress, and it will be sent to a local charity. There’s no shipping fees that you have to pay to have it removed and, since it would be impossible for you to put that mattress back into the box, you don’t need to do anything once you request a refund.
In addition, the makers of Nolah are so confident in the craftsmanship of their mattress that they offer a 15-year money back guarantee if there are any manufacturing defects that arise. Most traditional mattresses should be replaced after five years. Though it is a new company without a proven track record to show yet, they feel that you should expect to have your mattress remain comfortable and supportive three times longer than a regular mattress.
Good Corporate Citizens
There is a lot of competition in the online-only mattress world these days.
When you have so many good companies to choose from, one factor that can make a difference in the company you choose may be how responsible they are toward the community and the environment.
Nolah is just as committed to the environment as they are to your sleep. Besides the fact that they don’t use any harmful chemicals in the processing of its mattresses, they also contribute part of their profits to help protect the planet’s wildlife.
When you order a mattress from Nolah, you get to choose which kind of animal you would like to protect. Nolah will send a donation to Defenders of Wildlife and send you a certificate indicating that a contribution was made on your behalf to symbolically adopt your chosen animal.
It’s a nice relief to read about corporations doing good deeds. If nothing else, it helps you sleep better at night knowing you are supporting a company that values charity.
